SETUP & MAINTENANCE
Why do you need a setup ?
Wood is a living material, evolving with humidity or if you change the strings gauge. If you find your instrument being harder and harder to play (action is too high or too low, causing fret buzz), or if you want to change your strings gauge, then your instrument will probably need a setup.
A basic setup includes :
correcting the neck bow (trussrod)
correcting strings action at nut and saddle
setting the harmonics at the saddle
checking all the screws (tuners, pickups, bridge, tailpiece)
checking the electronics
changing the strings (strings not included)
cleaning the instrument
REPAIRS
Every musical instrument is repairable.
Only limits are the amount of time it takes (influencing the final price) and the luthier's own skills and experience. I will always suggest several solutions for your instrument, depending on its value and your needs : from a simple structural repair for a cheap instrument, to a complete restoration for a high value one. Repairs are done in a conservative way, meaning I use glues and finishing products in accordance to the original specifications of each instrument.
If your instrument shows an important defect (crack or hole on the top, lifting bridge, cracked head, etc. ) please unwind the strings to avoid additional damage due to the tension and bring it to your local luthier as soon as possible. Repairs will be easier and faster, meaning it will be cheaper for you.
